Oil painter
Judith Howells grew up in eastern Pennsylvania surrounded by beautiful,
yet rapidly disappearing open land. She received a BA from Wilson
College where she was first introduced to plein air painting.
After graduation
she worked as an art educator in public schools and for the Newark Museum.
She earned an MA in printmaking from Montclair State University.
Her landscape
paintings depict places close to her home (since 1991) in Pacific Palisades,
CA, and of Martha's Vineyard, MA,where she has spent part of every year
since 1979. She also paints still lifes from direct observation in her
studio.
Her smaller
landscapes are plein air works completed on site, as rapidly changing light
dictates working quickly and directly. Her larger paintings are more thoughtfully
planned in the studio, more introspective pieces informed by her smaller
studies.
"My work is
most definitely about change, both of time and place, but I am not overtly
preaching environmental issues. I do consciously select rather solitary
places, often overlooked spaces where land is vulnerable to man's encroachment.
I want that sense of solitude and vulnerability in my work. I also
seek it in my still lifes. My approach to painting requires a process of
introspection to extract the essence and to abstract overwhelming detail
in order to convey a certain resonance. Though my style of painting
is realistic, it is derived through a process of subjective scrutiny."

Artist Statement
The creative
process and the making of images have always been part of my life, both
as an artist and formerly as an art educator. Fundamental to my painting
is a search for beauty which I find in direct observation. A strong personal
interest always leads me to my subject matter. I do not attempt to paint
literally or to precisely describe, but I try always to paint truthfully.
I look for the essence of the subject and explore in paint those things
which have a special resonance. My paintings are intimate in perception
and explore a realism which is both objective and subjective. |
